In order to promote joyful, healthy and clear interpersonal relationships, we agree to the following guidelines concerning drugs and alcohol:
Smoking of tobacco is permitted only in designated outdoor areas (location to be determined).
In common spaces, alcohol may only be consumed in moderation and is limited to those 21 and over. Alcohol stored in common spaces must be locked. "In moderation" is defined not by quantity of alcohol consumed, but by socially appropriate behavior (i.e., no unusual loudness, profanity, aggressiveness, unwanted touching, lack of motor control, slurred speech). At PTEV events, we strongly encourage the practice of designating a driver if others are drinking.
Alcohol use is permitted in people's homes at their own discretion.
We encourage the storage of drugs and other potentially harmful substances in childproof containers and the proper disposal thereof.
No abuse, production, or sale of illegal drugs is permitted anywhere at the PTEV. The PTEV recognizes and abides by all current laws on controlled substances.
Substance abuse problems with smoking, alcohol, legal and/or illegal drugs will be addressed internally by those with treatment skills in that area and/or by the Process Team. We expect that PTEV members will not come to meetings or drive while intoxicated or under the influence of drugs. Violations by substance abusers will be addressed by the PTEV and may result in serious consequences, including dismissal from an event or meeting, loss of PTEV vehicle driving privileges, fines, or being required to leave the community.
Background:
We want to promote a drug and alcohol policy that will lead to healthy and clear interpersonal relationships, as well as reducing our risk of liability. Since the PTEV is a Limited Liability Company and we all own everything in common, we want to emphasize our responsibility to one another living in community.
We have not yet experienced on-going problems with substance abuse in our PTEV. This proposal is an attempt to be clear about our policies on drugs and alcohol.
We do not want to permit smoking in individual homes since this could affect a subsequent member's ability to live in that dwelling. Due to the adverse health effects of second-hand smoke, we do not think it is healthy to permit smoking in the common buildings.
Since the drugs defined as illegal are not permitted elsewhere in Port Townsend, they are not permitted here.
